CHAPTER EIGHT

By the time Friday evening came around, Waneta's anticipation for the youth volleyball game had waned significantly. She had agreed to ride with Sarah in Jebediah's buggy. When it arrived at her house, there was another girl inside as well who was in the same year of school as Fannie, though a few months older.

Fannie went onto the porch with Waneta, and when the other girl, Emma, saw her she walked to the side of the buggy, leaned out of the door, and waved. "Fannie!"

Fannie waved back and smiled, though with less enthusiasm than her friend.

Waneta squeezed her sister's arm and said in a low voice, "Don't worry, you'll be able to come with us soon."

"It's okay. Someone has to watch the kinner while daed goes to the hospital to see mamm." What Fannie didn't say was the same thing that Waneta didn't say: neither of them wanted to go to the hospital and see their mamm so still and thin. "We are going to make paper dolls tonight. And a paper house and a barn and farm."

Emma said, "Waneta, hurry up! We still have to get Jacob and we don't want to be late!"

Waneta walked to the buggy and got in. Sarah and Jebediah sat together, their hips touching as they shared the driver's seat.

‘Look at them,’ a soft, mean voice whispered in the back of Waneta's mind. ‘Positively indecent the way they are sitting. As though she owns him.’

Waneta closed her eyes. ‘Dear God,’ she prayed, ‘please make these voices go away. Make them be quiet.’

It was a prayer she had made before, and while she knew that God was giving her strength to face this, the voices never completely faded. All she could do was ignore them.

Waneta focused on the movement of the buggy bumping beneath her and the sound that the wheels made as they moved over the asphalt. The best thing to do was to make the other noises around her loud enough to drown out the ones inside of her mind.

"Waneta, are you okay?" That was Emma.

"Fine."

"You look like you might have been a little bit sick."

"Nee."

"So I heard that you and Jacob spent some time together after church last week..."

"We did."

"And?"

Waneta wasn't sure if she liked Emma at all.

"He's new here, and lonely. That's why I wanted to make sure he came out for the volleyball game. And other youth events. That's all."

"Oh." Emma looked a bit disappointed, and then she brightened up."Well, I'm sure Hannah will be happy to hear that."

Waneta hoped that Hannah did not set her sights on Jacob, not because Waneta expected to win Jacob's affections for herself, but because she felt the other girl might overwhelm and overpower the shy boy. It was only fair to protect him.

Waneta let Emma chatter on about whatever she felt like, making sure to insert the occasional sound of interest, until they finally reached Jacob's grandmother's house.

Jacob was waiting on the porch for them.

Emma climbed over Waneta so that she could
